Leander Surpasses Mahesh's Score

India's Leander Paes and his Zimbabwean partner Cara Black won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title on Sunday, beating Wesley Moodie of South Africa and Lisa Raymond of the US 6-4, 7-6 (7/5).

After several breaks of serve in the first set, doubles veterans Paes and Black eventually came out on top.

Paes and Black, who put up a striking performance coming into the final, broke their opponent thrice and won the first set 6-4 in just 37 minutes.

The second set stretched to a tie break; however a backhand shot at the net from Paes ended the match in 97 minutes.

Paes and Black both flung their racquets in the air before embracing at the net.
The final was played on Centre Court immediately after Rafael Nadal beat Tomas Berdych in the men's singles final.

With the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles victory, Paes goes beyond his one-time doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi in winning the most Grand Slam titles for India. Paes now has six doubles and six mixed-doubles titles at his credit and Bhupathi has 11 Grand Slam titles –seven mixed doubles and four doubles titles.

Paes and Black were also victorious at the 2008 U.S. Open and this year's Australian Open.

Paes won the 1999 and 2003 mixed titles, and the 1999 men's doubles.

Black has previously won three Wimbledon ladies' doubles titles and one mixed.

Black and Paes will split $140,000 Prize money.

Lee is a wonderful sportsperson with a quality of never say die and has great sportsmanship.

Nadal A Well Oiled Machine

Raffa Nadal at the age of 24 wins his 8th Grand Slam Title in the form of Wimbledon and first Spaniard to win it twice. After the first two round hick-ups Nadal played just like a well oiled machine. His footwork and endurance makes him a great player but his attitude on and off the court makes him the greatest.

Raffa needed 2 hours and 13 minutes to defeat the 6'5" Cezh Tomas Berdych at the score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Raffa flung his racket after ripping a fabulous forehand winning passing shot and collapsed on his back on the brown patch of the lawn.

After the match Tomas Berdych admitted that ""He was really strong today. He's showing in the last few months that he is really the champion."

Nadal broke Berdych four times and never lost serve in 15 service games, rallied with guts and served immaculately.

"It was probably one of the toughest moments in my career," Nadal said after accepting the winner's trophy Sunday from the Duke of Kent. "A win here was always my dream. I did it two years ago."

He said: 'To have this trophy in my hands is more than a dream for me. Playing my fourth final was amazing after a difficult year last year.

I hope that he wins the US Open in September to complete his Slam. If that happens I think that Nadal then should end the year with world number 1 ranking. Hey I am watching the mixed doubles final and hope that Lee wins this one.

Vamos!!!! Now Next Is US Open for Raffa .... Vamos!!!!

The Progression

My son Allan Gomes is a prominent tennis player of the Gujarat State and has number of creditable titles in his name. I have traveled with him a lot. I was given a tip by Mr. C G K Bhupati (Mahesh Bhupati’s father) that “don’t leave your son alone when he goes to play the tournament as from the 32 players there are only two players who are serious about their tennis career, so just find out second one and let your son have his company.” Thank you Mr. Bhupati you are so right – well the tip was given free of charge.

When Allan was around plus 13 years we went and watched number of challengers and futures tournament. We went to Chennai three years in a row to watch the ATP Tournament where we learned lots of good things by watching the pros.

Akhtar Ali Sir, taught Allan how to be gutsy and what it takes your game to next level, well this tip was not free. Akhtar is a great Coach, trainer, personality and a motivator. I have learned number of coaching tips from him; I can still visualize his training session.

I have a very good experience of Hemant Bendre Sir; Allan was with him for four years and he matured into a serious player, I am proud that my son has taken lessons of life and play from such learned coach as a fatherly figure. Till date Allan has something new to say every time about events, tips that happened during their training session. Thank You Sir.

The main Architect of Allan of being a decent tennis player is Mr. V.K.Rawat. He was his basic coach and both of them worked hard as if they were on a MISSION. Rawat sir was then Chief Coach of AGETA and at Presently running SRAG Tennis Academy at Gurukul, Ahmedabad. I was fortunate enough to work honorary with him for a brief period in the evening from 7 to 9.

Allan was also trained for brief period by Mr. Pavan Patel (I rate him the best coach at the local level who had the understanding of international flair and coaching tools).

I was one of the pioneers of Ace Tennis Academy when it used to be run by a Trust, now it has turn to a Pvt. Ltd. It is great Academy where Allan was trained by Mr. Pramesh Modi for couple of years. We had great time, fun and improvement. Akhtar Ali Sir use to also come almost regularly in those days in the summers. Ranjit Thakore the then Chief Coach of Ace Tennis Academy had also put great effort in his practice session.

About Me

Sports are my passion – Tennis is my first love, to recall I started playing tennis when I was 26. In school days I was a football player – Right Outer for the school team (St. Xavier’s High School, Ahmedabad, I was Selected by none other than Bro. Bou). When I saw tennis at PRL (Physical Research Laboratory) sports club I was really amused to see that in this game one can receive the ball after one bounce! Oh Boy! That is pretty easy and that is how I started playing this game, where ‘love’ means nothing but I have an ‘advantage’ of pursuing my passion. I have represented Gujarat University thrice as a Table Tennis Player in Inter University Tournaments.

In couple of years I (I am central Government employee) started playing the Civil Services Tournaments and The Central Revenue Board tournaments, Won the PRL Sports Club Tournament. Played couple of State tournaments and clinching headlines in the local dailies.

The purpose of this blog is to highlight the environment of tennis in the Gujarat State thereby being informative of the happenings, scenario about tennis game in State.
