Wimbledon, the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, is also famous for its delicious strawberries and cream. Thousands of spectators visit the event annually to enjoy the tennis, the atmosphere, and the strawberries and cream.

The classic Wimbledon ritual is to eat strawberries and cream while watching the largest tennis tournament of the year.

Taste of Wimbledon - Strawberries and Cream

They are simply drenching fresh strawberries in whipping cream signaling the beginning of Wimbledon and the British summer.

In 1877, when just 200 people attended the first Wimbledon tournament, the delicacy is claimed to have been served.
Cardinal Thomas Wolsey of King Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain, Cardinal Wolsey, is regarded as the first person to invent the treat in the early 16th century.

However, one of the most frequently asked questions is, "Where do Wimbledon strawberries originate from?"

The answer is that these strawberries are grown in the beautiful countryside of Kent at Hugh Lowe Farms, the home of the Wimbledon strawberry run by a family with a fascinating heritage spanning 100 years.

Since its inception in 1877, the Wimbledon tennis championship has been known for its traditional dessert of strawberries and cream.

The combination has become so well-liked over the years that, on average, 10,000 liters of cream and 28,000 kilograms of strawberries are consumed yearly throughout the tournament for two weeks.

Tough Love

What is tough love in sports coaching?

In sports coaching, tough love means discipline. This involves the coach being firm with the player and holding them accountable for their actions. The coach needs to be consistent with this approach so that the players know what to expect. This type of coaching can be beneficial because it teaches the players how to improve their self-esteem and also respect the rules and authority.

Some people may view tough love as a negative coaching style because it can be seen as too demanding or harsh. However, if used correctly, tough love can be a successful way to motivate and encourage players to reach their full potential.

Tough Love = Trust+Honesty+Loyalty

When using tough love, it is important to maintain a balance. The goal is to push the players to improve, but not to the point where they feel overwhelmed or discouraged. There needs to be a clear line between what is acceptable and what is not.

Tough love can be an effective coaching style, but it is not for everyone. It is important to consider the players’ personalities and what type of environment they thrive in before deciding if tough love is right for them. When it comes to sports coaching, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Different players respond to different styles of coaching, and it is important for coaches to tailor their methods to fit the individual.

Tough love is one of the ingredients of coaching philosophy of ‘The Gomesee Way”.

Tough Love - Love and Honesty ..... Trust and Loyalty

This style of coaching has been gaining popularity in recent years. Tough love is a no-nonsense approach that is designed to push players to their limits. It is about setting high expectations and demanding hard work and dedication. One of the main benefits of tough love is that it can help players to reach their full potential. By pushing them out of their comfort zones, they are forced to grow and improve. This can lead to better results both in training and in competition.

Tough love churns out the best performance and results as it wonderfully works on discipline and self-esteem of the student/player and simultaneously teaches them to respect the rules and the authority.

It’s fair to say that tough love can be an effective coaching strategy, but it only works if the coach is coming from a position of love and respect for the student.  And he is a MASTER in his subject. With those three things in place, tough love can be effective in getting the best out of the players.

Tough love is all about building character. Late Shri Akhatar Ali use to say, "Mr. Gomes, Big Character Big Player, Small Character Small Player". Yes tough love builds character.

I learned from my mother, "खिलाना सोने के निवाले से पर देखना दुश्मन के निगाह से”

Means

“Feeding with a morsel of gold but seeing through the eyes of the enemy” .... This is what tough love is ….

Tough love gets the player out of comfort zone, gets the player in to high intensity zone and motivates the player to go for the ball (Champions don't wait for the ball they go for the ball)

Tough love makes the player understand that tennis is a war out there in a form of a game, enjoy the challenge by giving whatever you have and remember that it is not a show down business i.e. Tennis court is not the place to settle down one’s ego.

I have observed that the coaches who follow the Tough Love style of coaching will always respect the time and energy of the student and demands constant improvement. They are very demanding coaches but very caring almost a father figure. It is well said, कोच एक बाप के जगह होता है.

Tough love is used to motivate athletes by challenging them and setting high expectations. If you think your coach is bugging you, he is a pain on the neck, or you are annoyed then remember he has seen that spark in you and he wants to turn that spark into a winning flame.

“…. Should Not Play Tennis and Waste Time ....”

A girl student with low self-esteem and an introvert who was written off as a failure have the last laugh. She scored 68% in her 12th Board Exams.

This is the result of a blunt assessment of a teacher some 18 months back who remarked that “Ruchi is a Dodo and a below-average student who should not play tennis and waste time...”

We took it positively and faced all odds and had no cooperation from any side, however, we started to work on the basics on a war footing.

She had no tuition (her parents could not afford it) and studied on her own. Did  Not go to school which did not seem to be productive (……… girl's school).

She continued her tennis deliberate practice daily for two hours (except Sundays ) and one hour of typing daily (at present her typing speed is 45WPM and accuracy 98%)

At first, her English teacher ignored her that she is no good; nevertheless, she scored the highest marks in her class.

Above all, she is playing awesome tennis in such a short period...

Lesson - "Let your racket do all the talking .... Actions speak louder than voice. God gives equal talent to all. How you value it and use it, is the winner in life."

This short journey of Ruchi is all about fighting for your DIGNITY

An introvert girl from a humble family background fought for her DIGNITY.  She has realized that a ‘Dignified’ life can be achieved by a tool called “Being Comfortable in an Uncomfortable Zone"

The killers of your dreams are – Laziness, Procrastination, and Excuses. The world-class is comfortable with uncomfortable situations

Dignity

"I leave the court, leave the tournament with the head very high. I fight until the last ball. I fought until the last second of the match, and I'm proud of it." - Carlos Alcaraz said after losing his bout against Alexander Zverez

A Dignity is a powerful tool because it is rooted in respect. When we show dignity to others, we are acknowledging their worth as individuals. This sends a strong message that we believe in their ability to contribute and succeed. Dignity is also a great motivator. When we know that we are respected and valued, we are more likely to put forth our best effort. This is why so many successful people credit their success to the support of loved ones who believed in them. So, if you want to be a winner in life, start by showing dignity to yourself and others. It's a quality that will take you far!

There is no greater feeling than stepping onto the tennis court and giving it everything you have. It is a place where you can be yourself and just let go. Let the game flow through you and become one with your racquet. This is what it means to be a tennis warrior. It is not about winning or losing, but about the journey. It is about the journey to becoming the best version of you.

Every day you step on the court is an opportunity to grow and learn. You will have good days and bad days, but it is how you handle the bad days that will define you as a player. If you can learn to pick yourself up after a tough loss and keep moving forward, then you are well on your way to becoming a true tennis warrior. It is not an easy task, but it is worth the effort.

So, be brave. Be dignified. Be a tennis warrior. Tennis is a sport that requires a great deal of skill and athleticism. It is also a sport that requires a great deal of mental toughness. If you want to be a successful tennis player, you need to be able to handle the ups and downs of the game with dignity and grace.

Comfortable with Uncomfortable

It's either comfort or growth..... You can't have both...

Tennis warriors are comfortable with uncomfortable. They chose to be in the enduring zone rather than remaining in the emerging zone. Tennis warriors believe in deliberate practice and know that it is challenging and uncomfortable.

Comfortable with uncomfortable is a mantra that tennis warriors live by. They know that to become experts in their game, they have to commit to deliberate practice - even if it's challenging and uncomfortable. Tennis warriors know that the key to success is to embrace the discomfort of deliberate practice. They understand that it's through this commitment that they will reach their goals and become the best players they can be.

But what if I told you that discomfort is a good thing? Think about it - when was the last time you made a significant change in your life without feeling at least a little uncomfortable? Probably never, right? That's because change is uncomfortable. It's natural to resist something that makes us feel uneasy. But here's the thing: without discomfort, we would never grow or change. We would never step outside of our comfort zones and we would never reach our full potential.

So if you're feeling uncomfortable while practicing, don't worry - you're on the right track. Embrace the discomfort and keep moving forward towards your goals. You'll be glad you did!
